The Mission of the Cardozo Society of the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor is to strengthen relationships among Jewish attorneys, judges and law students in Ann Arbor through education and leadership, while working together to enhance the quality of Jewish life in Ann Arbor and throughout the world.
Members are leaders in the Jewish community who contribute $1,800 or more to the Annual Campaign of the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor. For a gift of $3,600 or more, members will be included in the prestigious Honor Society.
Cardozo Society programming integrates legal and Jewish concerns to demonstrate the unique contributions the legal profession can make to improve life and society. Our members are encouraged to take an active role in the work of tikkun olam (repairing the world) through participation in the many efforts of the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor.
Benjamin Cardozo was born into one of America’s oldest and most distinguished Sephardic Jewish families, among the founding members of Congregation Shearith Israel, the oldest congregation in North America. A graduate of Columbia Law School and a distinguished litigator and courtroom orator, Cardozo earned a reputation for the utmost integrity. In 1932, Cardozo was appointed by President Herbert Hoover to a seat on the United States Supreme Court.
At a time when “polite” anti-Semitism was rampant among the New York social elite and Jews were excluded from many venues, Cardozo demonstrated leadership in Jewish organizations such as the American Jewish Community and the Zionist Organization of America. Harvard’s Professor Roscoe Pound considered Cardozo one of the ten best legal minds in American history and said his writings and opinions contributed greatly to the evolution of American common law.
