WHAT IS A DONOR ADVISED FUND?

A Donor-Advised fund is a named fund of the Jewish Community Foundation in which the donor retains the privilege of making non-binding recommendations for charitable grants to be made from the fund.

The fund can be established with a minimum gift of $5,000 with the opportunity to make additions to it at any time.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO YOU?

  • You are able to recommend support for causes of specific interest to you now and in the future.
  • You may make recommendations for grants from both income and principal.
  • You receive an immediate income tax deduction for the amount of the initial gift to the Foundation and again at the time and in the amount of subsequent gifts.
  • No tax is paid on the income generated by the fund.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • You make an irrevocable gift of cash, securities, or other property to the Federation to establish a named fund.

  • You and other designees may recommend (but not control) charitable distributions from the fund.
  • Charitable distributions can be made to appropriate I.R.S. section 501(c)(3) public charities with purposes consistent with the Federation's broad purposes, following approval by Federation.
  • The fund earns income as determined by the Foundation, which is credited monthly.  Investment income is also available for distribution.
  • Charitable distributions may be recommended as often as monthly.
  • You may include one generation of your children as current or future advisors on distributions.
  • Any assets remaining in the fund upon your death or your children's death are used to support the endowment mission of the Federation and Foudation.
